These exquisite antique treasures, found in Kyoto, are utilized in Katazome, a stencil dyeing technique employed for Kimono fabrics.
Crafted from Japanese washi paper and carefully hand-cut to create beautiful motifs—often portraying kamons (Japanese family symbols)—these pieces narrate a rich history and evoke the fantastical ambiance of the Edo period. They are truly works of art.
Technically, the Katazome washi papers are coated in multiple layers with Kakishibu, a dye derived from persimmon tannin through a traditional Japanese process. This method involves fermenting the tannin juice from unripe persimmon fruit, resulting in a wholly natural and time-honored approach.
Beyond their aesthetic appeal, the Kakishibu dyeing method creates both powerful antibacterial and antioxidant effects, while also possessing water and stain repellency.
