Hydration is an album created by Tenka, Japanese sound artist known as Meitei, lives in a small island in Hiroshima. Spending lots of time in the mountain forests that he lives close to, his latest project Hydration explores the rich sensory pleasures of his natural surroundings, focusing on colour, sound, smell, humidity, touch, atmosphere and taste.
 
We, on the other side of the ocean in Germany, translated his sound creation into an olfactory landscape based on long conversations with Tenka. We carefully chose 13 plants for their therapeutic qualities, as well as their historical background and meaning. Each plant has its own stories to tell, characteristics, tones and energies, thus the capacity to speak on our behalf.

[ About the Scent ]
 
Composed of freshness of camphor Kusunoki tree, woody scent of Hiba (Japanese cypress) tree, green earthy note of grounding vetiver roots,  alongside other 10 botanical ingredients, the scent is the blend of essential oils which are steam distilled, 100% pure and natural.
 
One of the key ingredients was that of Camphor. There is a giant Camphor tree close to Tenka’s place, and this is one of his sources of inspiration. Camphor tree, ’Kusunoki’ in Japanese, is often seen planted in precincts of temples and Shinto shrines, it’s considered to be sacred. It is thought to be highly sedative, and soothes us by freeing our spirit. Vetiver, which is distilled from the roots of its grass, keeps us grounded, deepening our connection to nature and aiding self-awareness. Coriander seed on the other hand is supporting creativity and giving life as seeds and berries are the core of a plant’s reproductive system. Juniper berry is known for purification, encouraging elimination and improving the quality of body fluid.

[ About Tenka ]
 
Known as Meitei who has established himself as a defining voice in contemporary Japanese music, following the release of his album trilogy (Kwaidan, Komachi and Kofū). By sharing intricate sonic stories and impressions of his nation's rich culture, he has built an aural world around his notion of the ‘lost Japanese mood’.
His latest project, under the new moniker Tenka, aims to work without the boundaries of theme, storytelling or audience expectations.
